The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
