Roughly 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they stated in a official communication.
Officers report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Officers then found numerous other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public exhibition of Nazi-era symbols.
Law enforcement say preliminary tests show the substance was most likely human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to solve the case" and have requested to the public for tips.
A senior representative stated the vandalism rendered him stunned and needed to be resolved promptly.
"This event hits the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, referring to the death of nine victims by a shooter aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
